Some of the beautiful people we have met:
Nick, Inez, and PomPom from California;
They are the happiest and nicest couple. We first met them one day as we were sitting on the ground in front of a building having a snack. They are waking the Camino with their dog that is sometimes in a front harness or walking the cold mornings with a jacket and hood or running the trail and playing in the grass. Nick is originally from Roswell, New Mexico and showed us his Zia tattoo on his leg. He calls us his peeps. We have run into them in several towns and many other people that we come across all know PomPom who has become a celebrity on the trail.
Amanceo;
In a town called Hornillos del Camino, we sat and visited with 92 year old Amanceo. He owned a little shop that sold everything people many need on the Camino. Shoes, sandals, mole skin, hats, hiking poles, socks, sleeping bags ..... you name it, he had it. He has owned the shop for 54 years. His wife of 74 years got sick on the 6 of July, and she passed away on the 16th of July. He has two sons who are married, have kids of their own, and live in Burgos, which is about 45 minutes away. One is a lawyer, and the other does something in medicine. He doesn't see them very often. 😥. When I asked him if we could take a picture with him, his eyes lit up, and he came from around the counter to set us up on a place he thought was the best place. With tears in his eyes, he gave my brother a very firm handshake and kissed him on his cheek. He came up to me and gave me me the best hug ever, kissed me on both cheeks, and gave us a blessing for the remainder of our Camino. We didn't want to leave, and when we walked out of the shop, we were so overcome with emotions that our hearts felt heavy.
Dennis, Magdalena, Ula 5 years old & Marielle 2 1/2 years old from Freiberg, Germany;
They are riding the Camino on bikes and riding about 120 kilometers/74.5 miles a day. The girls are in a type of basket in the front of the parents' bikes. It was about 9:30 in the evening, and I was sitting in bed sorting our days out when my brother came upstairs and said that a some people from Germany wanted to meet me because he told them that I had lived in Germany before. I went downstairs, and Dennis pulled out a bottle of wine so that we could visit. Dennis did the Camino last year with one of his daughters because the Camino was something his dad always wanted to do but is not physically able to do it. This year, they felt like it was something they needed to do as a family. The kids were in bed, and they had a really cool baby monitor on their phone. They said they like to sit and visit with people when they get to the place they'll sleep because they love meeting people and learning about everyone's "story." The girls were the most adorable little girls, and each of them were carrying a stuff rabbit. I took my bear and dog off my pack so that they could see them, and they thought it was the greatest thing ever. As we said our "see you laters" it was another best hug day.
Carmen;
Fromista, Spain, we met 82 year old Carmen, who says that she is 28 at heart. She welcomes pilgrims at the Iglesia de San Pedro every day and loves meeting people from all over the world. There was no one else around, so she showed us around the church and museum and told all about the 14th and 15th century items in the church.
Every day is a new day, and everyone has such a beautiful story to tell.
